When Endings Lead to New Beginnings

Embracing new beginnings is a profoundly individual experience, shaped by the unique circumstances and stages of one's life. It involves navigating a multitude of emotions, from apprehension to hopefulness, and is a critical component of an individual's overall progress and maturation. As I reflect on my own journey, I've come to understand that embracing new beginnings isn't always the most enticing prospect initially, yet it serves as a catalyst for progress and transformation.

There's a certain inconsistent quality to embracing new beginnings—it can evoke both reluctance and a sense of necessity. I've found myself theorizing between these sentiments, recognizing that while stepping into the unknown can be daunting, it is often instrumental in shaping our future trajectories. This sentiment is better captured by author Louise Penny, who once remarked, "Life is change. If you aren't growing and evolving, you're standing still, and the rest of the world is surging ahead."

My own journey into the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) exemplifies the transformative power of embracing new beginnings. During my undergraduate studies, I had a solid theoretical foundation but lacked practical exposure to the field. By chance, an internship opportunity at a nearby ABA company presented itself, providing me with a firsthand glimpse into the intricacies of applied behavior analysis. This experience not only deepened my passion for the field but also led to my certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), marking the commencement of a new chapter in my professional journey.

After graduation, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to work as a full-time in-clinic RBT at the same company where I had interned. However, as time progressed, the organizational landscape underwent significant changes, with many familiar faces departing. The sense of trust and support that once characterized the workplace began to erode, replaced by a palpable atmosphere of burnout and disillusionment.

In confronting this reality, I grappled with the decision to pursue a new beginning—a decision that was both daunting and liberating. Despite my affection for the children I served, I recognized that remaining in an environment that compromised my well-being was untenable. As I deliberated my options, the words of author and philosopher Eckhart Tolle resonated within me: "Some changes look negative on the surface, but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge."

With a sense of resolve and optimism, I took the leap towards a new beginning, bidding farewell to the familiar confines of my previous workplace in pursuit of greener pastures. While the transition was not devoid of challenges, it ultimately propelled me towards a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment.

In summary, embracing new beginnings is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit—a willingness to confront the uncertainties of change in pursuit of growth and authenticity.
