Conference Series
This session picks up where universal (Tier 1) classroom management leaves off, focusing on Days 11–20 for individualizing support for students with complex emotional and behavioral needs. Grounded in evidence-based classroom management, MTSS/PBIS, and trauma-informed practice, participants learn to conduct informal functional behavior assessments, identify the function behind challenging behavior (access, escape, attention, or automatic reinforcement), and teach a matched replacement behavior using strategies like Functional Communication Training and differential reinforcement. The session also covers de-escalation planning ("time-in, not time-out"), data-driven progress monitoring, and the referral path to formal FBA/BIP when informal supports aren't enough. Participants leave with one student, one hypothesized function, and one replacement behavior to begin teaching by Week 4.

Objectives

Participation

 Audience

Identify the function behind challenging behavior — Use informal ABC data to hypothesize whether a behavior is driven by access, escape, attention, or automatic reinforcement.
Teach a matched replacement behavior — Apply functional equivalence, Functional Communication Training, and differential reinforcement to replace problem behavior with an appropriate skill that serves the same purpose.
Build a data-driven support plan — Combine de-escalation planning with ongoing progress monitoring to decide when to continue, adjust, or intensify support — and when to move toward a formal FBA/BIP referral.
